Mainly
wine tasting aims at driving those involved in the challenge towards
appreciating the wine as well as its makers. One starts with the basic senses
and with time, and through learning, you get to taste like the pros. While
scents go up to the thousands, tastes are quite a few; bitter, sweet, sour and
salty to mention but a few. Over time, and with practice, you will be able to
draw the thin line between these tastes and express yourself like the wine
tasting experts do.
Once
you get handed a glass of wine, the first thing you note is the color and what
follows in most cases is the scent. To get the right color, it is important
that you place the glass on a white background. When it comes to smelling, whirl
your glass for a few seconds. It helps vaporize the wine’s alcohol, and this
comes out with the scent for your sniffing. Now, to the part most relevant to
us, tasting. When it comes to tasting, you should first take a small sip and
let it spool in your mouth. While different people divide tasting phases
differently, the most common get split into three phases.
The first tasting phase is called the attack phase. Here your palate determines the first impression by gauging alcohol levels, residual sugars, and acidity levels. The first stage is not definitive, and you need the evolution phase, which helps determine the wine’s flavor. Here you hear comments such as fruit names, herbs and anything else associative to taste. Finally, you get to determine how long the wine’s taste stayed on. Here, you also get to decide whether you would want to take another sip or not.
